I'm an Associate Professor and the Director of the Government Research Bureau at the University of South Dakota in the Department of Political Science where I specialize in American Politics. I'm also affiliated with the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Born and raised in Sweden to Colombian and Swedish parents, I received my Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of New Mexico in 2016. I received my MA (2011) from UNM and BA (2009) from Colorado Mesa University, both in Political Science.
My primary research concentration lies in the interaction between political institutions and identity, particularly as related to the representation of women and other marginalized identities, including race and ethnicity, my secondary research agenda relates to the political science profession and pedagogy.
My co-authored book, Working Parents Represent: How Parenthood Influences the Legislative Agenda of Members of Congress, is currently under contract with NYU Press. My solo-authored work, Representing Outside the Box: Identity-Based Constituencies and Surrogate Representation in U.S. State Legislatures is also under contract with NYU Press.
I'm also a co-editor of The Palgrave Handbook of Political Research Pedagogy (2021) with Palgrave Macmillan and co-editor of Strategies for Navigating Graduate School and Beyond published by the American Political Science Association (2022).
In addition, I've published in journals such as American Politics Research, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Social Science Quarterly, Policing: An International Journal, and Politics, Groups, and Identities. In 2021, I was named the APSA Latino Caucus Emerging Scholar.
My research has been awarded the Hahn-Sigelman award for best paper in APR 2019, and has been featured in the Monkey Cage, the LegBranch blog, and the LSE USCentre blog; I've also published short pieces in Mischiefs of Faction.
An award-winning teacher, I teach a variety of courses in American government and institutions, as well as courses in Women and Politics, Politics of Inequality, Writing and Research, and Introduction to Political Science. My courses center around an active learning pedagogy that is student-driven and promotes experiential learning. I'm also the faculty advisor for USD’s Gamma Nu chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha Honors Society in Political Science.
